Overview
Effective volunteer management is key to building motivated, engaged and well-supported volunteer teams. This training session, “Volunteer Management,” is designed for volunteer managers and anyone responsible for supervising volunteers, helping them develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to manage volunteers positively and effectively.
The session begins by exploring why people volunteer and the different motivations, expectations and experiences individuals bring to their roles. Understanding these motivations helps managers recruit appropriately, communicate clearly and create meaningful volunteer opportunities. We will then focus on getting volunteers off to a good start, covering role descriptions and volunteer agreements, induction and training, relevant policies and procedures, codes of conduct, and the importance of support during settling-in and probation periods.
Participants will also explore how to build stronger teams through supportive leadership, creating an environment where volunteers feel valued, included and motivated. The session will address how to manage performance issues and conflict constructively and fairly, helping to resolve concerns early while maintaining positive relationships. Finally, we will consider practical ways of recognising and valuing volunteers, reinforcing their contribution and supporting long-term engagement.
